Ami Paris Heart-Embroidered Denim Shirt Review: Cream vs. Indigo, Tested Side by Side at $47.01

Two colorways, ten inspection points and a retail reference: our hands-on notes on the $47.01 AMI Paris heart-embroidered denim shirt, including the variant mix-up in the feature list that can send you the wrong garment.

Ami Paris Heart-Embroidered Denim Shirt Review: Cream vs. Indigo, Tested Side by Side at $47.01

We ordered the Ami Paris Heart-Embroidered Denim Shirt, SKU 7704995532, in both the indigo and cream colorways at $47.01 — the listing still displays a $52.88 reference price and marks the item in stock. Both garments reached our Los Angeles testing lab, where our testing team ran a ten-point apparel inspection on each, wore them for more than 20 hours apiece, and compared them side by side with retail product data and reference photography for the Ami de Coeur denim shirt.

The variant problem to solve before you pay an agent

The title, description and photos describe one garment: a cotton denim shirt with a collared neckline, a button front, long sleeves and a heart-shaped embroidered motif on the chest, offered in blue or cream. The feature list underneath it describes at least three different garment families. It names two short denim jacket styles — code 2266 in indigo, apricot and apricot-with-red-heart, and code 2288 in the same three colors — plus a separate badge oxford shirt under code 2215.

That means the same SKU page can send you a shirt, a cropped denim jacket or an oxford button-down depending on the option the agent picks. Before you pay, message the seller or your agent and ask which style code ships and whether the fabric is denim or oxford cotton. Our two units were the denim shirt as described, but nothing in the listing structure guarantees that for the next buyer.

What the ten-point check covered

Our sneaker checklist — box label, packaging, smell, stitching, glue lines, midsole shape, outsole pattern, tongue tag, insole, silhouette — does not translate cleanly to a woven garment, so we substituted four garment-specific points for the footwear ones. The ten checks we ran on each shirt were:

  • Label: heat-transfer neck label against the retail label typography and placement.
  • Packaging: poly bag, fold lines and whether the heart motif was protected in transit.
  • Smell: straight out of the bag and after 24 hours of airing.
  • Stitching: topstitch density along the placket, side seams and shoulder yoke.
  • Buttons: finish, thickness and whether the buttonholes were cleanly cut.
  • Placket: straightness on the button band and alignment of the buttons with the holes.
  • Collar stand: whether the collar sat flat and rolled evenly at both sides.
  • Cuffs: sleeve opening shape and whether the cuff closed without puckering.
  • Heart motif: font weight, stitch density and placement on the chest.
  • Care tag: font consistency and symbol spacing on the inner wash label.

How the $47.01 shirt stacked up against a retail reference

Retail AMI Ami de Coeur denim shirts sit in the $335 to $390 band and are listed as 100% cotton, made in Portugal, with a button-down collar, a buttoned placket, two-button cuffs, mother-of-pearl buttons and a rounded hem. Some seasonal versions add contrast tobacco stitching or a hand-crocheted patch instead of flat embroidery. Our unit matched the fabric story and the general silhouette; it diverged on two collar and hem details.

Wear test: what 20-plus hours changed

Each shirt went through at least 20 hours of wear split between desk work, walking and light running, plus two layering sessions under an open jacket. The denim softened noticeably after the first few hours and creased at the elbow the way cotton denim should. No seam, cuff or placket issue appeared during that window, and the heart embroidery showed no loose threads or pulls. The straight hem sat higher at the back than a rounded hem would, which matters if you plan to wear it untucked over a longer tee.

Cream vs. indigo: which one we would reorder

The two colorways are not simply a color swap. Indigo hides the tobacco-style topstitching well and reads closer to the retail photos, but it also picks up lint and shows fold creases from shipping for the first day. Cream is the more interesting layering piece and the heart motif contrasts more strongly against it, but it is unforgiving of handling marks and needs a cold wash on its own the first time. Both matched the colors shown in the listing images under daylight.

Washing, dye and the details that decide a reorder

We cold-washed each shirt separately on the first cycle. Indigo released some dye into the water, which is normal for cotton denim, and the cream shirt showed no transfer to a white cotton towel during wear or drying. Treat the indigo as a garment that bleeds for the first two or three washes and keep it away from light knitwear. The published authentication guidance for AMI heart-motif pieces — heart logo font weight and placement, neck tag stitching and spacing, wash tag font consistency — is worth applying on arrival, because those are the details replicas most often fail. Our units passed all three checks.

Sizing: what the evidence does and does not cover

The catalog lists a regular fit in S, M, L and XL, and independent messaging on this listing other than our own order is thin. AMI's own fit guide advises taking your usual size for shirts and notes that some styles are unisex — men choose their usual size, women go one to two sizes down. A community review of an AMI De Coeur T-shirt describes a regular, true-to-size fit. Those references cover T-shirts and shirts generally, not this denim garment, so treat them as a starting point rather than a verified fit guarantee for this listing.

AMI Paris: "Some of our styles are unisex. For men, choose your usual size; for women, choose one to two sizes down. If you are between two sizes, we recommend choosing the larger size."

One rep-community post on an AMI knit flagged a size chart with a notably short sleeve measurement — about 60 cm at XL — so sleeve length is worth requesting from the seller before you commit, especially if you wear your sleeves unrolled. The most reliable route remains flat-measuring a cotton shirt you already own, chest and body length, and comparing those numbers with the chart rather than working from height and weight alone.

Frequently asked

Is this a denim shirt or a denim jacket?

The title, description and photos show a denim shirt, but the feature list also names two short denim jackets (style codes 2266 and 2288) and a badge oxford shirt. Confirm the exact style code with the seller before ordering.

Does it run true to size?

The catalog lists a regular fit in S–XL. AMI's fit guidance and a community review of an AMI T-shirt describe a true-to-size regular fit, but those references cover T-shirts, not this denim shirt, so flat-measure before you buy.

How does the $47.01 copy compare with retail?

Retail AMI Ami de Coeur denim shirts list around $335 to $390 in 100% cotton with a button-down collar, two-button cuffs and mother-of-pearl buttons. Our unit matched the fabric and hardware feel; the collar shape and hem differed.
