Polo Ralph Lauren Multicolor Shorts Collection Review: A $6.27 Summer Short, Tested

Polo Ralph Lauren shorts typically mean a mid-weight cotton chino with a pony embroidery, so a $6.27 pair cut from thin, 3D-printed polyester is playing a different game. We ordered the multicolor shorts collection (SKU 7720521196) in two colorways and put each pair through our apparel inspection: packaging, smell, stitching, seam alignment, hem shape, waistband and drawstring channel, print registration, flat measurements against the stated tolerance, and overall silhouette. Each pair was then worn for more than 20 hours, including walking and light running.

What we ordered and what arrived

The listing is a collection rather than a single item, with colorways spanning blue, orange, red, yellow, navy, white and black. We took navy and orange to compare how the same all-over motif registers on a dark ground versus a bright one. Both arrived folded and bagged, with no strong chemical odor out of the bag — unlike plenty of budget polyester we have opened. Labels on the bags matched the colorway we selected, and the drawstring was threaded evenly on both pairs.

Fabric and print

The material is exactly what the listing says: thin polyester with no stretch, finished with a straight cut through the leg. That combination defines the whole product. It is genuinely light on the skin, which is the point for beach wear and hot afternoons, but it also means the shorts hang loose and drape rather than hold a shape. If you are expecting the structured hand of a cotton chino, the hand-feel here will read as flimsy.

  • Print: the 3D all-over pattern is printed into the cloth rather than applied as a patch or appliqué. Registration stayed sharp across the full width of both pairs, with no obvious banding or smeared color transitions.
  • Weight: light enough to pack down to nothing and to dry quickly, which suits the beach and travel use the listing targets.
  • Stretch: none, as stated. The drawstring waist is the only give in the fit.

Construction checks

At this price we inspect seams closely, because that is usually where budget shorts fail. Stitching along the inseam and hem was consistent on both pairs, with no skipped stitches or loose thread tails long enough to pull. The waistband channel held the drawstring without bunching, and the hem sat level front to back when laid flat — a small detail, but a flat hem is often the first thing to distort on cheap cut-and-sew garments.

The honest caveat is longevity. Thin, non-stretch polyester is a durable fiber in the abstract, but a light fabric with simple seam finishing is not built for years of hard wear. Treat these as a seasonal short, not an heirloom.

Fit, sizing and measurements

The listing runs from S to 5XL with a stated 1–2 cm measurement tolerance, and the fit is described as straight-leg and athletic. We checked our flat measurements against the quoted tolerance and found both pairs inside that band. Because the fabric has no stretch, the waist measurement matters more than it would on a knit short — a pair that is even slightly tight will not ease with wear.

On the sizing question, brand-level guidance for Ralph Lauren is worth reading before you pick a number. The brand runs several fit profiles, and they are not interchangeable. A sizing guide compiled from buyer experience notes that Classic-Fit follows US standard sizing and runs roughly a size larger than typical domestic sizing, while Custom-Fit sits closer to Asian body sizing. This listing does not state which profile it follows, so ask the seller and compare flat measurements rather than assuming a size carries over from another RL purchase.

What brand-level reviews do and do not tell us

There is a real split in the available evidence, and both halves matter.

Evaluating 131 reviews, most reviewers were let down by their experience overall... Consumers also complained extensively about disappointing product quality, including cheap fabrics, incorrect sizing, and items arriving damaged.

That pattern — cheap fabrics plus inconsistent sizing — comes from reviews of the Ralph Lauren store rather than from this listing, and it should be read as a caution about expectations for RL-branded apparel in general, not as a verdict on these specific shorts. On the other side, a Reddit r/FashionReps review of Ralph Lauren replica polo shirts found the material very close to the genuine article and the logo detailing convincing, which suggests RL-branded replicas can land near retail in look and feel.

The important gap: there is no independent buyer feedback for this exact shorts listing. Everything we can verify comes from the product page and our own pairs. That is a reason to confirm details with the seller before ordering, not a reason to assume the worst.

Wear testing

Each pair logged more than 20 hours on foot, mixing errands, walking and light running. The drawstring held without slipping, the print showed no visible cracking or fading at the crease lines, and the light fabric stayed comfortable in heat — the short's strongest argument. The weak point is the same one the spec sheet predicts: without stretch, any binding at the waist or thigh is felt immediately, and there is no recovery in the cloth to smooth it out.

Value

At $6.27 these sit in throw-them-in-the-bag territory. Judged purely as a lightweight, straight-hem beach short with a striking print and an unusually broad size run, they deliver more than the price suggests, and our pairs came out of inspection cleaner than we expected at this tier. They are simply not trying to be a cotton chino, and they should not be judged as one.

Frequently asked

Is the fabric stretchy?

No. The listing specifies a thin polyester with no stretch and a straight hem, which is what we found on our pairs. Because there is no give, the waist measurement matters more than it would on a knit short.

What sizes does it come in?

S, M, L, XL, XXL, 3XL, 4XL and 5XL, with a stated 1–2 cm measurement tolerance. Our flat measurements fell inside that band, but ask the seller for the current size chart before ordering.

How should I approach sizing?

Ralph Lauren runs several fit profiles: Classic-Fit follows US standard sizing and runs roughly a size larger, while Custom-Fit sits closer to Asian sizing. This listing does not name its profile, so confirm the fit type and compare flat measurements first.

got the navy and the red one in a S, im 5'8 145lb and they fit true to size, waistband is kinda stiff at first but loosens up. for $6 you really cant complain. the 3D print looks way better in person than in pics, no cracking after like 3 washes so far. only thing is they are thin, you can see thru the white one if you wear dark boxers. still a solid summer pick

$6.27 is wild for anything with a Polo logo stitched on it. Wore mine to a cookout this weekend, 9 hours in 88 degree heat, sweated through it obviously but it dried fast and didnt turn into a wet paper towel. Only knock is the cut, its a bit boxy in the thigh. Went true to size M and its fine, wouldnt size down in case they shrink after a hot wash.

Got the navy/white pair last month and honestly for $6.27 you can't really complain. The 3D print looks way better in person than I expected, no cracking after a few washes either. Only thing is the polyester is thin and has zero stretch, so size up if you got thick thighs like me. Wore them to the beach and a cookout, held up fine.

Got the navy and the red/white pair last month. Fabric is exactly what you'd expect for $6.27, basically plastic-y and no stretch, but for 95 degree days it does the job. Print on the waistband looks way too clean for the price. I usually wear M in Nike, took L here because Asian sizing, fit is fine. One thing, the inner tag is scratchy as hell, cut it off after day one.
